Online Water Quality Monitoring

The project will develop and implement a self-sustained, low-cost
online water quality monitoring system, to spread awareness of the
results and to make a feasibility study on how to empower and stimulate
local entrepreneurs to establish businesses based on the system. The
system will be based on wireless sensor network technology.

Creation fo the technological platform for UNAH

Summary of project objectives: 

The main goal of the project is to provide UNAH with a modern ICT infrastructure to strengthen its research capacity and support UNAH important role for the whole country development. The project is divided in two parts:
a) UNAH ICT Policy and Master Plan
b) ICT implementation

The initial phase of the project is dedicated to formulate a general and complete design of all ICT services that UNAH requires and a proper strategy for their implementation and support. The result of this extensive process that involved all UNAH internal stakeholders and external partners is the ICT policy and Master plan documents. These documents shall drive the ICT development at the University. The main goal for the ICT implementation phase is defined by the ICT policy and Master Plan. Priority is given to the implementation of the main network infrastructure that shall support UNAH point of presence around Honduras. A set of critical ICT services including e-mail and web-portal have been included into the most urgent requirements. Capacity building is a necessary background for the success of the whole project and its future sustainability.

ICT at Universidad Mayor de San Andrés

Summary of project objectives: 

The main goal of the project is to provide UMSA with a modern ICT infrastructure to strengthen its research capacity and support UMSA´s important role for the whole country development.

There are 4 main activities 

  1. Network Infrastructure. The aim is to build the large and complex network infrastructure UMSA requires.
  2. Information Systems. The aim is to build the main information system UMSA organization requires. This includes web-portal, UMSA Academic Information System and UMSA financial Information System.
  3. Library System strengthening. The aim is to update UMSA's library-system procedure and service. The key activity is to move the whole manual library catalog to an electronic format.
  4. Human Resource Training. The goal is to create the know-how necessary to implement, maintain and utilizethe new technical solution.
Results produced: 
  • Network backbone infrastructure completed according to design (cabling, equipment, network services)
  • New service implemented (Web portal, Email, Academic information System, Financial Information System, basic elearning infrastructure)
  • UMSA Library system automatized and catalog move to electronic format.

Leveraging Mobile Platform Technology for Pro-poor Development

Given the lack of countrywide data and landline network, this project aims to harness the only technology available for the majority of Ugandans and develop and roll out onto the market at least three SMS/ GPRS applications that respond to the information and communication needs of the rural and urban underserved communities.

Summary of project objectives: 
  • To develop, pilot and roll out applications (supported by SMS and GPRS) that transder the concepts of ICT for Developmetn and ICT for Poverty Reduction to practical reality for the rural communities in Uganda and elsewhere.
  • To develop the necessary back-end linkage (data sources, and servers and linking to the telecom networks) that will be the source of the data.
  •  To address other development information dissemination needs within the Ugandan economy that can be best served using the cellular platform.
  •  To build capacity of students in the development of applications for human development and/or commercial exploitation; and consequently support the growth of the software industry in Uganda.
  • To lead to a greater under insight into the process of effective technology transfer, with specific focus on ICT for Development, in countries like Uganda.
Results produced: 

Since the kick-off meeting in April 2006 an incubator has been set up, student software developers have been recruited, the first application to be developed has been identified, and research into communication and information sharing needs is underway. Within the scope of the first application that has been identified to be developed, AmateGaitu Cooperative Ltd's (dairy farming cooperative) are collaborating with the Makerere incubator to develop an Integrated Agricultural Information Management System (AGRISERVE) to share information, induce trust in the industry and provide all stakeholders with necessary information. Mobile phones will provide last mile input of data and access to information, which will allow decisions to be based on current and accurate information. It is believed that this project will quickly help to increase quality through a quality assurance mechanism, access to information and the transparency that the new system provides.

The project partners have requested an extension of utilization of funding. SPIDER is currently awating a proposal for the extended period.

ICT in rural development in Bangladesh

Summary of project objectives:

Empowering SHGs in Kenya and India through ICT for better education and alternative livelihood opportunities

The overall objective of this project is to empower Self Help Groups (SHGs) to identify viable livelihood opportunities in order to improve their socio-economic status whilst bringing the wellbeing of the environment into the equation. Citizen Identity Registration System and Unique Citizen Identity Number

Without knowing and registering the population, a nation cannot facilitate its citizens with government services in an efficient and effective manner. Mozambique has no central register of its population nor has each citizen a unique personal number. There are various ID documents/cards issued (i.e. election card, military card, health card, driver license, passports) by various agencies belonging to different ministries, and for each type of document/card separate and non-linked numbering is applied.

Summary of project objectives: 

The overall objective of the proposed project is to i) pilot the population register as the core of the e-government initiative including investigating and testing integrations and interoperability to the rest of the e-government, ii) to develop one national unique identification number and iii) to deploy a thousand identification cards as a proof-of-concept project.
