Abstract: In December 2011, the House of Culture was opened on the grounds of the National Museum of Tanzania in the city centre of Dar es Salaam. The aim is to connect to as well as to expand the National Museum's activities of documenting, exposing and educating about cultural heritage and contemporary culture of Tanzania. In the process of transforming the National Museum - originating from the British colonial era - into a National Museum and House of Culture, new media and communication technologies are intended to play a role, primarily through the project 'ICT for public access to cultural resources', funded by Spider and including a recording studio and multimedia centre.

This research project investigates and analyses practices initiated by and related to this project at different stages of the House of Culture's opening year, with a certain focus on how in particular children and youth engage with media technologies and facilities. The analysis is solidly contextualized in the National Museum and House of Culture's activities in particular, and in media, youth and educational discourse and practices in general. This paper will discuss findings from the first field study conducted in February and March 2012.
